Over the course of each school year, my Pinterest boards become full of classroom do-it-yourself projects that I just don't have the time to complete during the school year...then comes summer! Since I've been out of the blogging world for much of the last year, I thought I'd start my comeback (crossing my fingers) with some pictures of projects I've accomplished over the last few months. I will go ahead and include links, if I have them, to the original ideas. Let me know if you have any questions of any of the projects included here!<br />
<br />
Here. we. go.<br />
1. <span style="text-align: center;">The Teacher's To-Do list dry erase frame, extra crayon storage, and cutsied dollar baskets</span><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2. I mad 5 frog hats to be used when my kiddos sing songs like '5 Little Speckled Frogs.' It will help to give my kiddos a concrete example of numbers.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jIFm4ZV28CM/U98SEb6o1TI/AAAAAAAACVk/Z5VS4FhL3uE/s1600/frog+hat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jIFm4ZV28CM/U98SEb6o1TI/AAAAAAAACVk/Z5VS4FhL3uE/s1600/frog+hat.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;">3. A class set of number bond mats-These were super easy using my Silhouette Cameo!</span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
4. I can't relate to having misplaced library books in MY kindergarten classroom. Said no teacher ever :) This year I decided to make some library markers to help my kiddos mark the bucket they took their book from from (hopefully) a more accurate return.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48Tu37Hv4m4/U98SDsC7GkI/AAAAAAAACVY/TOrjB9ArTXw/s1600/IMG_2171-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48Tu37Hv4m4/U98SDsC7GkI/AAAAAAAACVY/TOrjB9ArTXw/s1600/IMG_2171-1.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
5. Glitter clothespins with tacs glued to the back for easy placement on my bulletin boards. I am in love with how these turned out. A few things I learned in this process-super fine glitter works best...be sure to apply your glue in a smooth layer to make the final product appear even...top with a coat of mod podge, so you aren't finding glitter around your room all year long!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u0dix7AsgjI/U98SDhuaGlI/AAAAAAAACVc/e8-EAF-WUV8/s1600/IMG_2264.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-u0dix7AsgjI/U98SDhuaGlI/AAAAAAAACVc/e8-EAF-WUV8/s1600/IMG_2264.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />

<br />
6. This summer I tackled a class set of seat sacks. I cannot wait to use these! I am also in love with how these turned out...The tutorial is super easy to follow and I highly recommend these for any primary classroom.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yjWXgZ3xQ5U/U98SE2vqleI/AAAAAAAACVw/fbtL0SMPxDQ/s1600/seat+sacks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yjWXgZ3xQ5U/U98SE2vqleI/AAAAAAAACVw/fbtL0SMPxDQ/s1600/seat+sacks.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></td></tr>

</tbody></table>
7. Zero the Hero cape- I plan to use this cape on every tenth day of school when zero the hero comes to visit...one of many behavior incentives. One lucky student will find this cape draped over their chair in the morning and will get to wear it during school for that day. I just might have to 'demonstrate' its awesomeness for a day too :) I made one adjustment from the tutorial below. Instead of a velcro or magnetic closure, I inserted a button. I also thought that ribbon could be a cute touch too, but I didn't want to deal with tying a bow or knot all day long.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ckoWY0Hr0NQ/U98SFRQeGCI/AAAAAAAACV4/VMZ6IKrzkJY/s1600/zero+the+hero+cape.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ckoWY0Hr0NQ/U98SFRQeGCI/AAAAAAAACV4/VMZ6IKrzkJY/s1600/zero+the+hero+cape.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.craftbuds.com/childs-cape-pattern-free/" target="_blank">Simple Cape Tutorial</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
8. Ombre Wooden Crates- I teach in a shared space classroom and am in serious need of more storage. These crates will help store my theme binders and will look super cute in the meantime. The crates were on sale at Joann's for $9.99, then I used a wonderful 25% off entire purchase coupon. YES!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gLKsX58evis/U98Y3sgg1HI/AAAAAAAACWY/Gm2QyZLeZdk/s1600/IMG_2255.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gLKsX58evis/U98Y3sgg1HI/AAAAAAAACWY/Gm2QyZLeZdk/s1600/IMG_2255.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I hope you found something helpful, useful, or just plain cute in this post!<br />

We been having pumpkin fun for the last few weeks. We had our first field trip to the pumpkin patch. What a blast! Below are just a few centers we've been working on. They are from my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pumpkin-Math-and-Literacy-357012">Pumpkin Math and Literacy Unit</a>.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The pumpkin/fall fun continues! We carved our class pumpkin, after each kiddo had a chance to dig out some yuck, then lit a candle and enjoyed the beauty :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rgVcXGpIlVQ/Um8s_TAhgDI/AAAAAAAACUM/CvYml4YwNqk/s1600/IMG_0702.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rgVcXGpIlVQ/Um8s_TAhgDI/AAAAAAAACUM/CvYml4YwNqk/s320/IMG_0702.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
After our pumpkin patch field trip, where each student got to take home their own small pumpkin, we did some investigating. So many fun activities to practice such important skills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3_RWBoEnqHk/Um8tMid5enI/AAAAAAAACUU/GpSGyfSB8PU/s1600/IMG_0676.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3_RWBoEnqHk/Um8tMid5enI/AAAAAAAACUU/GpSGyfSB8PU/s320/IMG_0676.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is random, but since I've been away, I thought I'd throw this one in. I am doing a Scientist of the Week this year, and it's AWESOME! I put together a book of experiments, including a lab coat and goggles. Every Friday, one student (and their assistant, otherwise known as a parent) presents their chosen experiment to the class. I am just loving it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5ye4Ffq2lrY/Um8tam4-r-I/AAAAAAAACUc/ltB5uND2WV8/s1600/IMG_0540.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5ye4Ffq2lrY/Um8tam4-r-I/AAAAAAAACUc/ltB5uND2WV8/s320/IMG_0540.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We've also enjoyed some baking projects, including <a href="http://www.ourbestbites.com/2011/10/candy-corn-sugar-cookies/">candy corn sugar cookies</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's to hoping the next blog isn't a month away! :)<br />
AdrienneAdriennehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04832828285317695041noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2112866512048880618.post-82905281124309380452013-09-29T19:47:00.001-07:002013-09-29T19:48:08.858-07:00Yikes! Where has the time gone?Does anyone else feel like there just aren't enough hours in the day? I'm finally starting to feel like I can keep my head above water, now that we're a month into school. I'm going to try and get myself back in the habit of sharing some fun center and other classroom idea. To start, I'm going to share some random things from the first month. Here goes nothin...<br />
<br />
Centers are off to a great start! We spend about 30 minutes each day in centers and the kiddos are working so hard practicing their routines of working independently, cleaning up, and transitioning.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xa0k2fyLldE/UkjgAtYEEfI/AAAAAAAACRU/yIQeKyhlR2c/s1600/IMG_0114.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xa0k2fyLldE/UkjgAtYEEfI/AAAAAAAACRU/yIQeKyhlR2c/s320/IMG_0114.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3q1lKtMz0-w/UkjggCQSO4I/AAAAAAAACRg/1lhaS4MTrbs/s1600/IMG_0116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3q1lKtMz0-w/UkjggCQSO4I/AAAAAAAACRg/1lhaS4MTrbs/s320/IMG_0116.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GkTeKxm7DBY/UkjgkqolbSI/AAAAAAAACSY/PdHV71zyIcE/s1600/IMG_0126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GkTeKxm7DBY/UkjgkqolbSI/AAAAAAAACSY/PdHV71zyIcE/s320/IMG_0126.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cz35dobVYCE/UkjgkOeAMoI/AAAAAAAACSU/W6TmMA7SnYE/s1600/IMG_1385.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cz35dobVYCE/UkjgkOeAMoI/AAAAAAAACSU/W6TmMA7SnYE/s320/IMG_1385.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have awesome interactive whiteboards this year. I am amazed at just how many different things we can do with them. Here are the kiddos working on sight words.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ewz5u_qmBrw/Ukjgh3c51YI/AAAAAAAACR0/9ECUL_-JqJ0/s1600/IMG_0205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ewz5u_qmBrw/Ukjgh3c51YI/AAAAAAAACR0/9ECUL_-JqJ0/s320/IMG_0205.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Just in the last month we've worked our way through Kissing Hand, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Brown Bear, and now we're just about finished with our Apple unit...Yikes, no wonder I can't keep everything straight!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3UqJec3tkxQ/UkjgiVZumZI/AAAAAAAACSA/1lpE1nv0rjk/s1600/IMG_0229.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3UqJec3tkxQ/UkjgiVZumZI/AAAAAAAACSA/1lpE1nv0rjk/s320/IMG_0229.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am so thrilled I found this <a href="http://theteacherwife.blogspot.com/2013/08/popcorn-words-update.html">cute idea</a>!! We are loving having popcorn whenever we add words to our popcorn word wall. Such a fun addition!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3EPynGI5Qb8/Ukjgi7hfI6I/AAAAAAAACSI/2CeZ7b0Qwo0/s1600/IMG_0278.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3EPynGI5Qb8/Ukjgi7hfI6I/AAAAAAAACSI/2CeZ7b0Qwo0/s320/IMG_0278.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />

The church uses our classrooms on Wednesdays and Sundays so we have to put EVERYTHING away, into a corner, on the weekend (except for what is on the walls). With that said, I do not have the freedom I'd like to decorate around the room, but I am pleased with how the room is put together, for now :) Please excuse some of my clutter, it's all put away now!<br />

I'm working on finishing up those last minute details before getting into my room and tackling the set up and logistics of a new room at a new school. Library pillows. Check. I'm hoping these directions make sense. Please let me know if they seem foreign! Gotta get my brain out of summer mode.<br />

Crate Seats 2. Refurbished file cabinet<br />
<br />
More than a year ago I came across the wonderful crate seat invention. Cute and incredibly useful in the classroom. Double the fun! I went out and purchased 5 quality crate seats. I knew I didn't want the cheapy ones since they would be sat on A LOT. I think I ended up buying them from Office Depot for about $8/each. Next, I took some scrap pieces of wood, about 1" thick. I passed those pieces and the crates off to the woodworking teacher at my school and he cut and sanded them down, so nicely I almost didn't want to cover them! The wood pieces fit perfectly inside the lip of the crate. Then, I went to my local craft store and purchased foam (about 3/4 inch think). This was a bit more expensive than I expected but you gotta love those 40% coupons! Finally, I purchased my fabric. It just had to be polka dots, the alphabet was just an added bonus ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JoskWkKZiJs/Uey7dWcjlWI/AAAAAAAACN8/K-5Ls9swAEY/s1600/crate1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JoskWkKZiJs/Uey7dWcjlWI/AAAAAAAACN8/K-5Ls9swAEY/s320/crate1.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
Once those pieces are completed, the crates are really quite simple to assemble. Cut your foam to rest inside the wood seat, cut your fabric to wrap around all edges, then staple gun your way around on the bottom side, nice and tight. Done! These seats worked fabulously in my classroom this year and I'm happy to say that I even occasionally used them as a seat for myself. I'd say that makes them a success! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--khr-PYGGTM/Uey78G4KE9I/AAAAAAAACOU/lmv-RH6rfc8/s1600/crate2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--khr-PYGGTM/Uey78G4KE9I/AAAAAAAACOU/lmv-RH6rfc8/s320/crate2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Next up was my file cabinet. I had an UGLY file cabinet in my classroom last year. It was old, stained, rusted, and just yucky. Who wants kids and parents to have to see that yuck? I didn't, so I made a plan to rescue it. I decided I would tape over my handles and just leave them be. I knew once I painted my cabinet the handles wouldn't stand out. I bought several cans of matte spray paint and painted the front, one side, the top, and just a little on the back. I didn't paint the back until it was a perfect blue since I knew it would be against the wall. Then I bought a can of black chalkboard paint and painted the one side I knew the kids would have access to. Works like a charm! The final touch, which made more of a difference than I would have expected, are the little pieces of scrapbook paper in the drawer label area. I just love a successful DIY! <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D2q34Hb_i-E/Uey7eHV0W3I/AAAAAAAACOI/QQI9rsWUuoU/s1600/file+cabinet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D2q34Hb_i-E/Uey7eHV0W3I/AAAAAAAACOI/QQI9rsWUuoU/s320/file+cabinet.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
Anyone else have some DIY success in your classroom?<br />

I Teach K was awesome and I can't wait to implement some of those wonderful ideas. I'm especially excited to improve my iPad (and iPod) effectiveness within my classroom. Once I get settled in my new classroom I will post some awesome apps that I hope to explore with my kiddos this year. Until then, I posted my second fan freebie on Facebook! It is a simple left and right game your kiddos can enjoy with a partner. I plan to print off enough for my entire class to work in pairs and play at the same time! Enjoy!<br />

We offer nearly every type of class you can think of- reading, writing, math, cooking, woodworking, nature, sewing, skateboard making, science, and so much more. The kids sign up for two new classes each week. This week I taught a DIY class. We had such a great time making fun Pinterest-y crafts. Take a look!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SQLrriUipFM/UeDVnkMj3tI/AAAAAAAACNY/BjiDscE0NKc/s1600/2013-07-12+21.17.12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SQLrriUipFM/UeDVnkMj3tI/AAAAAAAACNY/BjiDscE0NKc/s400/2013-07-12+21.17.12.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Now, speaking of 'my school,' on a bittersweet note, 'my school' is not my school anymore. This was my last week teaching there. I accepted a position at another private school about 45 minutes away. I am so excited for this new adventure as I will get to continue teaching kindergarten, but starting over is always a bit overwhelming. New students, new families, new curriculum, new coworkers, new schedules, new new new. Yikes, I'm tired just thinking about all that new! Anyways, I will be posting pictures of my new classroom when I'm in and settled. I can't wait to share in this adventure with each of you! But first, Vegas (I Teach K) here I come!<br />

I put together this special frame and took each of my students' pictures holding it. Afterwards, I printed, backed, and laminated each picture and passed them out to the parents at Back to School Night. They were a huge hit and something I must do every year!<br />
<br />
The frame was super easy to make. First, I purchased a large, cheapy frame. I was super excited when I found a blue frame as that cut out one step in my process, having to paint an unfinished frame. There was a downfall to this though. This particular frame from IKEA is super slick so once I had my product completed, I had to be very gentle with it as the letters popped off pretty easily. Now that I think about it, maybe an unfinished frame would've been easier ;) Do as you wish! Next, I found wooden letters and a few stars from Hobby Lobby and painted them to my liking. Finally, I glued my cutsie letters onto the frame! Done!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What are your favorite first day memory makers?<br />

Sleeping in. Breakfast. Relaxing...Just a few things that come with summer! My family and I took a wonderful trip to Seattle last week to kick off summer. Here is a pic of my boyfriend and I...love :)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JdnZi98teos/UcfkAi7cwHI/AAAAAAAACLk/HGDWSiK02oY/s1600/antuan+and+i+seattle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JdnZi98teos/UcfkAi7cwHI/AAAAAAAACLk/HGDWSiK02oY/s320/antuan+and+i+seattle.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
Anyhow, as I began thinking about how I'd like to start the new school year, I decided to make this simple shape sorting activity. There are students who have their shapes down and there are those that need continued practice. This activity will be great for some independent center work! Click on the picture to head over to TpT and download this freebie. Let me know what you think.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
On another note, I am getting pumped for I Teach K! Anyone else heading to Vegas to hang with some awesome kindergarten teachers? <br />

How can I thank the wonderful moms who have organized the volunteers for field trips and class parties? and 2. How can I help my students continue to grow, even after they leave me and begin a two and a half month long break? <br />
<br />
First, I've been thinking and exploring fun options to thank my parent helpers this year and landed with this one...a monogrammed etched glass mug, which I will most likely be filling with something sweet and colorful :)<br />
<br />
For those of you wondering, etching is actually quite easy. I used Martha Stewart's etching cream, which I picked up at my local craft store. I used my handy adhesive vinyl and silhouette cameo to make the monogrammed letter and 'thank you' phrase. The tricky part was placing the stickers onto a rounded mug. They're not quite perfect, but still look great! Once I placed the negative space of the letter onto the mug, I generously brushed the cream on, let it sit for about 20 minutes, and finally washed it off. So easy and so cute!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7R6tAOKe0V4/UaQOwpAq2eI/AAAAAAAACKU/CUNPUINTNh0/s1600/etched+mugs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7R6tAOKe0V4/UaQOwpAq2eI/AAAAAAAACKU/CUNPUINTNh0/s320/etched+mugs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Second, at the end of every school year I put a packet of review work together for the kids to work through over the summer. Anything to prevent the summer slide! This year, instead of putting together the usual pack of worksheets, I decided to create a fun, summer themed, colorful, hands-on pack, that the students might actually enjoy doing. Here are a few pics to show off some sample pages. Bonus: If you purchase this pack on TpT, you may distribute the pdf to each of the families represented in your classroom! <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Summer-Review-for-the-Kindergarten-Graduate-705245">Click here</a> to check out this nearly 100 page pack of fun for your kindergarten graduate to enjoy this summer!<br />

Yesterday was Luau Day. We played 'pin the coconut on the coconut tree' and made sand pudding. Everyone agreed it tasted better than sand at the beach ;)<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sand Pudding: Start with vanilla pudding, crush vanilla wafers and sprinkle on top, add gummy worms if you wish (though the kids and i agreed that someone should invent candy crabs)</td></tr>

This week is also our Spring Concert, so the kiddos are beyond exhausted, as am I! So, before I head out and crash for the night, I want to show you all a picture of one of the fun activities the kids are loving in centers, from my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Transportation-Math-Activities-689471">Transportation Math Pack.</a> Each hot air balloon has a number on the basket. The kiddos must solve the math problem on each part of the balloon and place it in the correct spot. I am SO proud of how comfortable they've become with addition and subtraction! <br />

A few weeks ago, we celebrated the wedding of Q and U. The boys came to school dressed as quarterbacks and the girls as queens. We had a blast! I used <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Wedding-of-Q-and-U">Growing Kinders Q and U Pack</a> for the wedding details and activities then added in my own touches. I was feeling like over achieving so I made cupcake toppers for our wedding cupcakes. Definitely a touch I'm glad I added. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="239" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--_w56Z39vts/UZGvD-gwMoI/AAAAAAAACI0/Skg6a5oEUIA/s320/QU+cupcakes.jpg" width="320" /></div>

Here are my lovely queens and rough-tough quarterbacks (attending the wedding as letters of the alphabet).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What's the best way to end the year? <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Year-End-Countdown-Activities-Freebie">ABC Countdown!</a> This is my second year doing the countdown and the kiddos have THE BEST time! Last year, I created a digital page of pictures from each day and printed a photo book for each student. It was such a hit, I've got to do it again this year. Today was F, "Favorite Book Day." <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you read "Hey, Little Ant" to your kiddos? It's such a cute book and makes them think about what they would choose... to squish the ant with their shoe or let it go free? We made this into a brief writing assignment and they did such a great job with many different, creative answers. Click <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzmsK3IIxkFUY2Fqa1d0cUVEM0k/edit?usp=sharing">here</a> to download the writing paper for your class. <br />

The kids loved watching our green celery turn red, after being placed into a vase with red water, doing plant art projects, life cycle pictures, and more! This first picture is an art/math project in <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Spring-Is-Here-Fun-Flower-Activities-for-Math-and-Literacy" target="_blank">Kim Adsit's Spring Is Here</a> unit. We've completed our art portion and will be moving on to some measuring and observation writing later in the week.<br />

Today, we completed our life cycle of a sunflower. Such a simple, yet effective, activity. We used real sunflower seeds to add a bit of life to our picture. They had a great time and did a wonderful job! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The next few picture are from some of our centers this week. In the first picture, the students are using sunflower seeds to help them subtract. It amazing how quickly they pick up on concepts when given a hands on approach. I can't remember if I posted about this already, so I'll just do it anyway :) In the last month, we have started working on our reading fluency with basic leveled passages (see the pic below). The kiddos begin by doing a quick practice of decodable words. Once they complete the list, they use the voice memos on the iPod to record themselves reading the given passage. Then, they listen to themselves read and repeat 2 more times. How do I monitor this? It's all about practicing routines and expectations...To start off, I walked through each step of the process with them, one at a time. Then we worked in into our center rotation, with my guidance. I would sit next to two kids and walk them through it, eventually working into my watching them do it on their own. Now, I just pop in and out of the center, once in a while listening with them and giving pointers. They're becoming such great independent workers! :) <br />

Sadly, it's coming to an end but I wanted to take a few moments to share some of the fun. It's always hard to find the balance of activities and relaxing as I am not a 'sit at home' kind of girl, however, I think this week has been just about perfect. What did I do?<br />
<br />
1. Worked out 3 of 5 days! I go through phases of working out. I'm either really into it and focused or really NOT! I'm hoping this has started a good trend for me. :) <br />
<br />
2. Hydrobiking! My boyfriend and I have done this once before, and thanks to Groupon, we were able to go again this week in Long Beach, Ca. What a blast! It's basically a pedal bike on water. If you ever have the opportunity, you must go! The pic below shows us on our tandem hydrobike. :) <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b6rLWSRQlqI/UV-r577rM_I/AAAAAAAACEg/2aEPzif2HnM/s1600/2013-04-05+22.00.05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b6rLWSRQlqI/UV-r577rM_I/AAAAAAAACEg/2aEPzif2HnM/s320/2013-04-05+22.00.05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
3. Two visits to Hobby Lobby resulting in a wonderful sewing experience. Sewing is a new hobby for me, and I'm definitely still a beginner, but with the help of tutorials and my handy dandy sewing machine manual, I made my first few throw pillows! How cute are these?!?! I already have friends requesting pillows :) Too bad spring break won't be continuing next week so I can sew some more! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eyVcBS_J-ds/UV-rxdxQcxI/AAAAAAAACEU/pXe-wFU8rOg/s1600/2013-04-05+21.57.22.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eyVcBS_J-ds/UV-rxdxQcxI/AAAAAAAACEU/pXe-wFU8rOg/s320/2013-04-05+21.57.22.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-jLVzfoxLo/UV-rxJxEKTI/AAAAAAAACEQ/y5BygkkQ_l4/s1600/2013-04-05+21.57.16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-jLVzfoxLo/UV-rxJxEKTI/AAAAAAAACEQ/y5BygkkQ_l4/s320/2013-04-05+21.57.16.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
4. Coffee with friends. I bet you can all relate with a busy life, and many of you probably even have kids to add on top of everything else. Sadly, coffee and chatting with friends gets put on the back burner. However, this week was a wonderful time of catching up! <br />
<br />
Here's to pushing through the last 40some days of school! <br />
